Several small towns in the state of Oaxaca have a long tradition of carving wood animals. A few years ago one of the craftsman began to play with more interesting animal forms and completly new ways of painting them. His work quickly became popular and other artisans in the area picked up on his ideas and a new local art form became established. Here we offer a variety of very nice examples. The simpler pieces are from the old tradition and the more elaborate are from the new.
