Folk art is by definition the art of the folk for the folk-beautiful things made at home by the unsophisticated for the neighbors. Folk art is almost always "utilitarian." Basically it was every thing that people needed in their daily lives. In time gone by when water had to be carried from the well, the most important thing was a practical container to carry water and a pitcher to have it available in the house; but folk art is also clothes, musical instruments, cooking utensils, furniture, toys and pretty things for gifts to beautify the homes of one's friends. More often than not this art was made by farmers during the off season, as something to do to earn a little cash to supplement what was basically a subsistence lifestyle. But there were a number of villages- Tonala, Acatlan, Dolores, etc. where folk art was always a full time occupation.
